Innovative Ecosystems in Barcelonès Nord
The Fundació b_TEC has been conducting the Innovation Ecosystems project in the Barcelonès Nord region since 2010 as commissioned by the Barcelonès Nord Forum of Municipalities
The creation of the Barcelonès Nord Innovation Ecosystem project (involving the municipalities of Badalona, Santa Coloma de Gramenet, Sant Adrià de Besòs, Montgat and Tiana) is intended to spur the transformation of the region's economy using criteria centered on innovation and new opportunities by transferring knowledge and technology to local industry.
Three University Areas
The project pinpoints the region’s three university areas as engines of knowledge able to generate new opportunities for local industry. Thus, the Autonomous University of Barcelona (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona) (UAB) in the Can Ruti Health Campus, the University of Barcelona (Universitat de Barcelona) (UB) in the Torribera Food and Nutrition Campus, and the Technical University of Catalonia (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya) (UPC) in the Diagonal-Besòs Campus of Technological Innovation are tasked with generating joint initiatives and projects that the ecosystem will promote and accelerate.
Industrial Space, Business Network and Entrepreneurship
The project maximizes the opportunities arising from the wealth of the region’s industrial space, the strength of its business network and the skills and talent of its people, which it utilizes to generate new production alternatives. Drawing on regional success stories –such as Barcelona's 22@ district– and on international leaders in Europe and the United States, the project seeks to achieve effective development and balance between physical, corporate and innovative subsystems, while at the same time ensuring increased efficiency in communication and governance processes.
The year 2010 marked the beginning of the initial stages of the program, and economic and institutional support was obtained from the Catalan Government (Generalitat de Catalunya) through the Catalan Employment Service (SOC). Throughout 2011, the project will focus extensively on communication and operational and institutional development.
