The congress has already become a compulsory appointment in the calendar of energy international events in Catalonia

19.06.2015

Experts from universities and research centers as well as companies met together at the X Barcelona Global Energy Challenges to present the challenges and energy solutions to be facing in the coming years. The conference, organized by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the Fundació b_TEC, the Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC) and the Technology Center of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (CIT-UPC), was held on 18 June in the auditorium of Torre Telefónica, near the future Campus Diagonal-Besòs.

Different from other editions, this year the conference started with a summary of the nine previous editions, through which we knew the evolution of the energy challenges of recent years. Then the plenary sessions dealt with crucial issues such as the discovery of new energy technologies, photovoltaics, electrochemistry and climate change. On the other hand, workshops allowed discussion on topics such as the effects of light on human health, energy efficiency in buildings, the capture and processing of CO2 and global market trends in electric mobility.

One of the most outstanding speakers was Fikile R. Brushett, assistant professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at MIT. His research group focuses on accelerating the development of transformative electrochemical systems with an overarching goal of enabling sustainable energy technologies.

The congress also counted on the presentation of Jessika Trancik, assistant professor of Energy Studies in the Engineering Systems Division at MIT. She researches on the dynamic costs and environmental impacts of energy technologies to inform technology design and policy.

In addition, Alejandro Pérez, head of the Laboratory of Solar Energy Materials and Systems at IREC, presented his research work on new PV technologies for high efficiency low cost thin film solar cells. Albert Cuchí, professor at the UPC, talked about sustainability and architecture. Besides, Laurent Bedel, Project manager at French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) was also present at the conference.

The event was sponsored by Fundació Repsol, Gas Natural Fenosa, KIC InnoEnergy and Telefónica.
